Utility
The Utility module holds small commands that need no setup. Today that is /ping, which shows how quickly the bot responds.
| Command | Description | Options | Permission |
|---|---|---|---|
/ping (also a prefix command) | Check the bot's latency | none | Everyone |
/ping
Run /ping and the bot replies with its latency in milliseconds, for example "Pong! Latency: 38.52ms". The number is how long Discord took to accept the bot's first response to the command, so a slow number points at a slow connection between the bot and Discord.
/ping works in servers and in DMs. Every member can use it. Utility has no dashboard panel or on/off switch; to hide /ping in a server, use Server Settings > Integrations in Discord.
The prefix form
ping is also a prefix command: mention the bot followed by ping (for example @BotBase ping). If the bot's operator set a text prefix in the bot's configuration, that works as well (for example !ping). Mentioning the bot always works, whatever the prefix. The prefix form sends nothing before its reply, so it has no first response to time and shows a latency close to 0 ms; use /ping to measure.
Change the reply
In servers the reply is the Ping Response system template (command.ping), so you can reword or restyle it:
- Open the dashboard's Templates page.
- Find Ping Response under the Utility templates and open it.
- Edit it in the Message Builder and save.
In DMs the bot always sends the plain default text.
| Template | Slug | Variable groups |
|---|---|---|
| Ping Response | @command.ping | Latency, Server, Invoker (Author) |
Latency
| Variable | Description |
|---|---|
{latency_ms} | How long the bot took to answer the command, in ms |
The shared groups (Server, Author) are listed with the common template variables. Every template also takes the Utility variables.
In this template the Invoker variables ({author.*}) describe the member who ran /ping.
