Moderation - Infractions
The infraction system keeps a point total per member. Moderation actions add points, the total shrinks a little every day, and thresholds take an automatic action when a member's total crosses them. It is off by default: until you turn it on, actions create cases but no points are counted.
Turning it on
- Open Moderation > Infractions.
- Switch on Infraction System.
- Adjust Points per Action and the Decay Rate if the defaults do not suit you.
- Add your thresholds under Punishment Thresholds (see below).
- Click Save Changes.
Points per action
| Action | Default points |
|---|---|
| Warn | 5 |
| Timeout | 8 |
| Mute | 5 |
| Kick | 10 |
| Softban | 15 |
| Ban | 20 |
| Forceban | 20 |
Each value can be 0 to 1000. Notes, unbans, untimeouts and unmutes never add points. AutoMod cases add the points you set on each AutoMod rule, and the Automations action "Add infraction points" adds its own amount and runs a threshold it crosses, like any other action.
Actions the bot takes on its own (threshold actions and Automations moderation actions) and the mass commands add no points. If an action fails in Discord (for example the bot lacks the permission), its case is voided and its points are taken back.
Decay
The Decay Rate removes that many points per day, continuously (a rate of 1 takes a member from 5 points to 2.5 in two and a half days). The bot applies decay every hour and whenever it adds points. A rate of 0 keeps points forever.
Thresholds
A threshold says "when a member reaches N points, do this". Add one under Add Threshold:
- Points: the total that triggers it (1 or more).
- Action: Warn, Timeout, Kick or Ban. A timeout threshold also asks for a Duration (s) in seconds (3600 is one hour).
- Reason (optional): used for the case. Without one, the case reads "Infraction threshold reached (N points)".
- Click Add. Thresholds are saved right away; the trash icon removes one after you confirm.
How thresholds fire:
- A threshold fires when an action crosses it: the total was below it before the action and is at or above it after. A member already above your ban threshold is not banned again by every new warning.
- When one action crosses several thresholds, only the highest one fires.
- A threshold can fire again later: once decay brings the member back below it, the next action that crosses it triggers it again.
- The threshold action creates its own case, with the bot as the moderator, and adds no points.
- If a moderator's action pushed a member over a threshold, the member must rank below that moderator. Otherwise the threshold action is skipped and staff get a bot alert, so a warning can never turn into a ban the moderator could not have issued.
When DM user on action is on, the member gets the normal DM for the action and the Infraction DM, which explains which threshold they reached. Edit its wording with Customize Template under Infraction DM Template.
Example ladder
| Points | Action |
|---|---|
| 9 | Timeout for 1 hour |
| 18 | Kick |
| 35 | Ban |
Decay runs continuously, so a total is almost never a round number: two warnings an hour apart come to just under 10 points (5 + 5, less an hour of decay), not exactly 10. Leave some room below round numbers, as this ladder does. With the default points and decay, two warnings on the same day cross 9 and time the member out for an hour (the threshold's own timeout adds no points). Two more warnings by the next day (about 19 points after a day of decay) take them past 18 and they are kicked. The ban threshold is only reached by a member who keeps collecting points faster than they decay.
Seeing a member's points
- Active Infractions at the bottom of the Infractions tab lists every member with points.
/cases member:@someoneshows the member's current total, with decay applied.- Each case on the Cases tab shows the points it added.
