Moderation - Setup

Moderation is on by default, and every command works without any setup. These steps make the records useful: a channel where cases are posted, a mute role, and the reasons your team uses most.

Moderation > Settings
  1. Check the bot's role position. In Server Settings > Roles, drag the bot's role above every role it should be able to act on. The bot refuses to act on a member whose highest role is at or above its own, and on the server owner.
  2. Give the bot its permissions. It needs Ban Members, Kick Members, Timeout Members and Manage Roles for the actions, Manage Messages and Read Message History for /clean, and Send Messages and Create Public Threads in the case log channel. Anti-raid, AutoMod and /massban also need Manage Server.
  3. Pick a case log channel. Open Moderation > Settings and choose the Case Log Channel. Every case is posted there, and a thread named Proof is created in it the first time someone attaches an image or file.
  4. Set a mute role (optional). Create a role that is denied Send Messages (and Speak, if you like) in your channels, place it below the bot's role, and choose it under Mute Role. /mute and /massmute give this role.
  5. Decide about DMs. DM user on action (on by default) tells a member when they are warned, timed out, kicked or banned. Turn off Include reason in DM to keep reasons private; the DM then reads "Not shared". Click Customize template next to a DM to change its wording.
  6. Add reason presets. On the Commands tab, expand /ban, /forceban, /kick, /timeout or /warn and add the reasons your team types most. They appear as suggestions in the command's reason option. The same card sets the default message delete days for /ban (default 1) and the default duration for /timeout (default 1 hour). /mute suggests the /timeout presets.
  7. Save. Click Save Changes in the bar at the bottom of the page.
  8. Try it. Run /note member:@someone note:Test in any channel. The bot answers privately with the case number and the case appears in your log channel and on the Cases tab.
Moderation > Commands: turn commands off and expand one for its defaults and reason presets

Any command can be turned off on the Commands tab; members then get a message that it is disabled. Turning the whole module off with the switch at the top of the panel disables every command and stops recording actions taken in Discord as cases.

Next steps

  • Turn on Infractions for automatic escalation.
  • Build AutoMod Rules to block words, spam and mention floods before anyone sees them.
  • Configure Anti-Spam and Anti-Raid before you need them.
  • Send moderation events to a mod log channel with the Mod Logs module.
