Age Roles

Age roles give each member the role for their age range, for example @Teens for 13 to 17 and @Adults for 18 and up. They only work for members who saved their birth year.

Age Roles: a 13-17 group and an open-ended 18+ group

Add an age group

  1. Open Birthdays > Age Roles and click Add Group.
  2. In the Add Age Role dialog, pick the Role, a Min Age and, for a closed range, a Max Age. Leave Max Age blank for an open-ended group such as 18+. Both ages are inclusive.
  3. Click Save.

Groups cannot overlap: a range that shares an age with an existing group is refused. The bot must be able to assign the role (it sits below the bot's highest role), and the role must be below your own highest role.

Use the pencil and bin buttons on a group to edit or delete it. Deleting a group does not take its role away from members who have it.

When age roles update

A member's age role is checked:

  • on their birthday, within a minute of it starting in their timezone (it does not wait for the Announcement Hour),
  • when they save their birthday on the dashboard's account Settings page (in every server they share with the bot),
  • when they answer a birthday question in a form.

At each check, the member gets the role of the group that fits their age and loses the server's other age roles. The first two checks only run for members with a birth year; a form answer without a birth year removes all of the server's age roles from the member.

Important

Creating or changing a group does not assign roles to existing members, and neither does /birthday set. Members get the role on their next birthday or when they next save their birthday on the dashboard.

To make sure every new birthday has a year, turn on Require Birth Year on the Settings tab. Members who saved a birthday without a year need to set it again with one.

Example

Min AgeMax AgeRole
1317@Teens
18(blank)@Adults

A member who turns 18 loses @Teens and gets @Adults on their birthday.
