Announcements

Birthday announcements go to the Announcement Channel on Birthdays > Settings. With the channel set to Disabled, nothing is posted, but the birthday role and age roles still work.

Individual or bulk

Announcement Mode decides how birthdays are posted:

ModePostsTemplate
Individual (default)One message per member, once per birthdayBirthday Announcement (birthday.announcement)
BulkOne digest per server day, listing everyone celebrating when it is sentBirthday Digest (birthday.bulk_announcement)

Individual mode feels more personal. Bulk mode keeps a busy channel tidy on days with many birthdays.

The default Birthday Announcement

Bulk line format

In bulk mode a Bulk Line Format field appears. It formats one line per member, and the lines fill {birthdays.today} in the digest template. It can use the same member, birthday and server variables as the individual announcement, up to 512 characters, and shows a live preview. Left empty, each line reads {member.mention} - Happy Birthday! :birthday:.

Bulk mode adds the Bulk Line Format field with a preview
The default Birthday Digest with two members

For example, {member.mention} turns {birthday.age} today! gives "@Iris turns 24 today!". For members without a birth year, {birthday.age} is empty, so keep the line readable without it or use a line such as {member.mention} ({birthday.date}).

Change the message

  1. On the Settings tab, click Edit Template next to Announcement Mode. It opens the template for the mode that is selected.
  2. Edit the message in the Template Group dialog or open it in the Message Builder. A group can hold several templates, picked one at a time.
  3. Save. The next announcement uses it.

The templates can use the variables listed on Variables, such as {member.mention}, {birthday.date} ("March 15th") and {birthday.age}.

When announcements are posted

Announcements start at the Announcement Hour in the server's timezone, but a member is only announced while it is their birthday in their own timezone. Missed hours are caught up: if the bot was offline at the hour, it posts when it is back, as long as the birthday has not ended. See Timezones and Timing for the details.
