Forms - Ban Appeals
The built-in Ban Appeals form (/ban-appeal) lets banned members ask to be unbanned. Only users who are currently banned can submit it, accepting an appeal unbans them, and staff can permanently deny someone who should not appeal again.
Set up appeals
- Open Forms, click the pencil on Ban Appeals and switch Enabled on in basics.
- Adjust the questions (for example "Why were you banned?" and "Why should we unban you?").
- On settings, choose whether staff vote (Enable Staff Voting). One Response Per User and Require Discord Login are always on for appeals.
- On channels, set the Appeals Review Channel, a staff-only channel where appeals are posted.
- Click Save Changes.
The bot needs Ban Members to check bans and to unban.
How banned members find the form
When the Moderation module bans someone with /ban or /forceban and DM user on action is on, the ban DM carries a link to the appeal form, but only while the Forms module is on and the Ban Appeals form is enabled. Softbans, kicks and other DMs never include it.
The link is the {appeal_url} variable of the Moderation Ban DM template; keep it in the template if you customize it. Banned members can also be given the link another way (the form's address, copied with the link icon on the Forms tab).
Signing in with Discord is required. The form page tells users who are not banned that they are not currently banned from this server; members with Manage Server can open it anyway to preview it.
Reviewing appeals
Each appeal is posted to the Appeals Review Channel with these buttons (and Upvote / Downvote when voting is on):
- Accept (Unban) unbans the member. With the Moderation module loaded, this records an Unban case with the reviewer as the moderator and "Ban appeal accepted" as the reason.
- Deny turns the appeal down with an optional reason. The member can appeal again.
- Permanently Deny turns it down for good, after you give a reason: the member can never submit this appeal again.
The same actions are on the Responses tab. A member can only have one appeal waiting at a time.
The member is told the outcome by DM. A denied appeal gets the Appeal Denial DM template (@appeals.denial.dm, registered by the Moderation module and edited on the Templates page), shown below as it looks in the Message Builder: it carries the denial reason, the original ban reason and a link back to the appeal form. Accepted and permanently denied appeals get a short default message.
